ABOUT US

The GESSS divisional student-run conferences are from an initiative of the Geological Society of Australia (GSA) that allows Honours, Masters and PhD students to communicate their research to their peers, gain experience in delivering oral and poster presentations, network with future employers, engage with external research groups and departments, and to meet new people in the Earth Sciences field.

The inspiration for the GESSS came from the Victorian Division of the Geological Society of Australia (GSA), which has supported the annual Victorian Universities Earth and Environmental Sciences Conference (VUEESC) for the last 30 years at Monash University.

2017 saw the first GESSS series, successfully held in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Tasmania.

The first GESSS-WA series was held in 2018, with an aim to continue the initiative annually and alternate between the host universities; The University of Western Australia and Curtin University.

The second GESSS-WA conference was held at Curtin University, with an icebreaker quiz night and field trip to Cottesloe.

2020 saw the first virtual GESSS-WA, with a series of great online presentations.

This year, the GSA Earth Sciences Student Symposium will be hosted in person at Curtin University, featuring talks and posters from a broad array of student research areas, including Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Space and planetary science, and more!

Membership of the GSA is not required to attend GESSS-WA 2021, however, it presents a great opportunity to become involved in the Geological Society of Australia!
